Ulva lactuca, also known as sea lettuce, is a type of seaweed belonging to the Ulvaceae family. It is also called sea cabbage, green seaweed, and other names, and is a common type of seaweed. It is widely distributed in the East China Sea and South China Sea, but is rare in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea.
The thallus of Ulva lactuca shows significant variation, with shapes including ovate, elliptical, lanceolate, and circular. The edges are slightly wavy and membranous. It is composed of two layers of cells, approximately 70μm thick, increasing to about 130-180μm near the base, and can even reach 500μm. The height ranges from 10-40 cm. The thallus has holes of varying sizes; as the thallus grows, several small holes can merge to form larger holes, eventually forming irregular lobes. Ulva lactuca attaches to rocks via a holdfast and lives in the intertidal zone of the coast, growing on rocks in the mid- and low-tide zones of bays.
Fresh Ulva lactuca undergoes harvesting, cleaning, cutting, and drying processes to become dried sea lettuce.
