The growth cycle of kelp.

As an annual algae, kombu has a complete life cycle of about one year. In artificial cultivation, the period from releasing seedlings into the sea to harvesting lasts approximately six months.

Specifically, its life cycle exhibits a clear seasonal pattern: from April to July, it releases motile spores that form gametophytes and then enters dormancy to survive the summer; in September, the gametophytes are fertilized, and from October to November, young sporophytes begin to develop. From December through April of the following year, the sporophytes enter a period of rapid growth. By April to May of the following year, they mature and enter the reproductive phase, completing one full life cycle. In artificial cultivation, seedlings are typically introduced at the end of autumn; after six months of growth, they can be harvested from March to April of the following year.
